How Financial Education Helped Alicia Raise Her Credit Score 72 Points

Alicia is a Client Success Ambassador, a member of our Professional Women’s Group (PWG), and a powerful voice in our community—sharing her story at events, including at The Disco Ball last year.

Her journey reflects what’s possible when women have access to the right tools, support, and opportunities to move forward.

Below, in her own words, Alicia shares her transformative experience participating in our recent Financial Education program in partnership with Capital One.

Before joining the financial literacy program at Dress for Success, I didn’t really feel in control of my finances. I was stressed about my money and budgeting every paycheck. My credit score wasn’t where I wanted it to be, I was still figuring out my credit cards, and saving just wasn’t consistent. I didn’t really have a plan—I was just doing my best to manage.

But during the program, things started to shift for me.

The program, presented by Capital One, broke things down in a way that actually made sense. We talked about real, everyday things—money basics, income and expenses, checking your credit, and how money shows up in your life. It also gives you practical tools you can actually use, and even the chance to earn up to $100 when you complete it—and for me, that $100 went straight into my savings.

I started being more mindful of how I spend and more intentional with how I use my credit. I focused on the best ways to build my credit, and I also got valuable information on investments, which got me thinking more about my future.

And honestly, seeing the results is what really changed things for me.

Within six months, my credit score went up 72 points, and I was able to pay off my credit card. That was a big moment for me. It made me feel less stressed, as well as a sense of hope for my future.

As a graduate, I also received a year of LinkedIn Premium and Career Coaching, which has been helpful as I continue to grow professionally.

Now, I’m in a different place. I have a better handle on my credit, I’m more consistent with saving, and I’m more intentional with my financial decisions. I’m even thinking more about investing and my long-term goals. And even now, I’m still on track.

I’m really grateful to Dress for Success, the team, and all the donors. This program helped me feel more confident, more grounded, and more in control of my future.

It helped me build habits that I know will stay with me long-term.
